Lapland is known for its vast subarctic wilderness, ski resorts, and natural phenomena like the midnight sun and the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights. It is Finland’s northernmost region.
Coming from a tropical country like Philippines, I didn’t know what to expect as it was my first time to visit Finland. I find Finland very cold especially during the winter. We were there at -13 degrees Celsius. So make sure to be prepared!
We arrived in Ivalo Airport then drove to Saariselkä where we stayed for three nights.
Our main goal for this trip is to experience the Aurora Borealis or the famous Northern Lights and it did not disappoint us! To see these lights is not guaranteed, but we were lucky to have witnessed this phenomenon right outside our cabin! Since I am not a professional photographer, the pictures were taken from my phone. There was no editing or filtering because I wanted to capture this moment in the exact way I was witnessing it.
What made our visit to Lapland extra magical were the igloo hotel and the outdoor activities like ski mobiling, ice fishing, husky/tdog sledding, reindeer rides and many more. Even if you don’t like outdoor activities, it’s a must, since this would be a once in a lifetime experience you would definitely enjoy.
Where we stayed : Igloo cabin in Saariselka. It was an awesome place and staying here was really worth it.
What we did : Husky/ dog sledding, Ice fishing, Ski mobiling, Aurora Borealis hunting and not to mention, food tripping.
Lapland has a unique cuisine. Don’t be afraid to experiment local dishes.
What you should try to eat :
Reindeer Steak
Cloudberry Sherbet
Here are some tips if you are planning a trip to Lapland:
1.Never underestimate the weather- keep yourself warm and dry all the time.
Bring a light waterproof jacket and bubble jacket/vest.
2. Use wool sweater, socks, beanies and gloves.
3. Heat tech tops and underpants will be helpful.
4. Choose the right shoes/boots. It must be comfortable, non-slippery and waterproof.
5.Be prepared and bring the most important stuff like medicines for headaches, cough and colds, diarrhea, antibiotics, cold sores and allergies. Don’t forget the lip balm and petroleum jelly too.
To see and experience the northern lights outside our cabin was one of the most unforgettable things that ever happened to me. It was once a dream of mine to visit Lapland, and with God’s grace, I was able to do so. You too can really make it happen if you put your heart into it and plan your travels well. Goodluck!
